Crossing the Nullarbor - Perth to Albany & Esperance
Nullarbor Plain is part of the area of flat, almost treeless, arid or semi-arid country of southern Australia, located on the Great Australian Bight coast with the Great Victoria Desert to its north.
Nullarbor crossing is a topic that is always discussed by most of the cycle touring people I have met on my journeys. All that time I was thinking about in my mind that one day I want to do this. As far as I know from some of the people it is a very boring ride and at the same time a very difficult project. So I thought maybe this will be a different experience for me and decided to do it anyway. So when I started thinking about the ride, I knew I needed a trailer to carry extra water and food supplies for remote areas. So after riding in New Zealand I left Auckland and headed for Perth, Australia.
After getting ready and testing my trailer enough times, I finally started my journey to Nullarbor from Perth. The weight of the trailer made the handle bar quite unstable at first, but I eventually got used to it and learned to adjust. It was quite a challenging start to my trip, but I was determined to keep going.
Perth City
I found these cycling tracks to be really helpful when I needed to escape the city.
Adequate shoulder space. 🚲
Meanwhile I opted for a bit of a countryside route and in the end it felt like a very good decision.
At this point I felt that my route was wrong and I was going in a different direction, but I looked at the map again and decided to move on.
The road started becoming narrow and sandy, making it difficult to ride a heavy bike.
So there was no other option but to push the bike for a long time.
Coffee and lunch break
Camping at Pemberton town.
One of the interesting parts of cycling which I enjoy most is visiting small town bakeries for cakes and coffees. At the same time you can have conversations with local people and get some information about their area.
Denmark in Australia!
Coffee session in the countryside cafe.
Also time to check out some chocolates.
From Denmark I headed to check Elephant rock and it was a nice ride through these narrow tracks without much luggage. I was lucky enough to spot a few kangaroos and snakes.
Elephant Rocks and Elephant Cove
Elephant, Ocean and my bike in one shot!
Kangaroo spotting
